Here is yet another
favorite of mine, the Eclectus, there
are few other birds that can boast the
beauty, style and grace of the Eclectus
Parrot! These fantastic birds are great
for people who suffer from allergies
because they do not shed dusty dander
from their feathers like many other
birds do. The males and females are
sexually dimorphic, with the males being
the bright green and females bright red
and blue. Females in the wild are the
more aggressive with mating behaviors
and feeding rituals. Unfortunately this
has people thinking that the females are
not equal to the males in “pet
potential”. This is an unfair label that
has been given to these beautiful girls
and could not be further from the truth.
Raised by a loving hand feeder and
placed in a loving home these girls are
every bit as good a companion parrot as
the males and there are plenty of
articles in bird magazines and bird
forums to back this up. Every bird is
individual in it’s personality, whether
it be male or female, and with ANY bird
people need to be informed and educated
about the needs of parrots in captivity
in order to have a happy healthy bird
and owner. Both male and female Eclectus
are very good at learning to talk. They
do require a high fiber diet of fresh
foods, I personally do not consider this
a chore, I consider it an act of love. I
enjoy preparing healthy meals for all of
my birds and it is easy, I whip up a few
simple recipes that fulfils their
dietary needs and freeze them in
portions, so I only actually cook for my
birds about once every other week.
