My love for
birds started almost 20 years ago with my
very first pet bird “Sophie” my beautiful
Lutino cockatiel. Sophie sparked what I have
discovered is a great passion in my life.
There where several factors that developed
this passion to the place I am today. I had
back surgery and while recovering I had a
lot of extra time to figure out which
direction my life would take. I found a new
hobby in show cockatiels, these were the
most gorgeous birds I had ever seen and I
was hooked. I no longer have time to show
birds but I do still raise cockatiels as
pets. I also have worked in pet stores and
was an avian specialist. I hand fed many
species of baby birds including Pionus,
Hahns mini macaws, Caique, Lory, Quaker,
Ringnecks, Suns, Jendays, green cheeks,
black caps, Patagonian, cockatiels,
parrotlets, and many more. This was
excellent hands on experience and I kept
strict record keeping, each baby bird had at
each feeding recordings of the time, weight,
amount fed, and the temperature of formula
at time of feeding. This needed to be done
so different hand feeders could keep track
of the feedings. It was just a natural
progression to bring my passion and
experience into my home! What I keep
referring to as my “passion” for birds is a
mixture of an enormous amount of love and a
great deal of respect for these amazing
intelligent animals, so with much support
and encouragement from my husband, Ted,
Central Virginia Aviary was born! The extra
time I can give to the babies I hand feed in
my home is dedicated to socializing them
with lots of hands on TLC, which is a family
affair here. This was something that neither
I nor any of my co workers at any pet store
I have worked for had time to do. This is
the most important ingredient and foundation
to making a bird a great human companion
pet. Parrots are not like puppy dogs, they
require a lot of proper handling during the
hand feeding and weaning process to tame
down their wild instincts, it is truly a
privilege to earn their trust love and
companionship and I have not ceased to be
awe struck by them! I also feel it is
important that I mention I am not a hobby
breeder this is my full time job!!!
At CVA we are
not only dedicated to raising sweet hand fed
and socialized birds, but we are equally
dedicated to our responsibility to place
them in loving nurturing homes! We can help
you decide if a bird is right for you or
which bird might be a good match for you.
Every animal deserves to be well taken care
of, all birds need a proper habitat, fresh
food and water daily, adequate time out side
of the cage daily, and daily interaction
with their “flock” which is you as their
owner!! This is not to be taken lightly,
remember neglect is a form of abuse!! A bird
can die fast if you do not provide proper
nutrition and fresh water each and every
single day and if you want one of my birds
you will have to love it enough to spend
quality time with him or her every day.
Birds are not for everybody, and this is
just a matter of educating yourself and not
making an impulse purchase. If you are a die
hard animal lover you are probably on the
right track! Please take the time to read
“Parrots Bill of Rights” on my website. I
love all the baby birds I raise here in my
home and I reserve the right to refuse a
sale if I feel it is in the best interest of
the bird. |
